Google? Yep, Google! Claudia
3.09.2006 [] - Permalink

Some of you have been worried about our future here at Writely. As one concerned user wrote:

"I love Writely, but... I was wondering, is there any way to send you guys some money? I understand it's free and all, but I just feel bad that you don't charge. Thanks!"

We appreciate the sentiment, and all the support we've gotten from our users, but thankfully, your donations won't be necessary, for one very exciting reason:

Writely is now part of Google!

Yes, we've been acquired by Google, and we're really excited about this for many, many reasons. But I can hear you saying, "I don't care why YOU'RE excited - I want to know how this change will impact ME!"

Our #1 priority is to maintain (and improve) the reliability, privacy and security of the Writely service for our current users.

The Google announcement will undoubtedly generate a lot of interest in Writely -- perhaps too much -- and we're committed, on your behalf, to keeping our current service running smoothly. So, while we're moving Writely to Google's software architecture, we're closing off new registrations. Get on the waitlist and we'll notify you via email when you'll be able to try out Writely.

But what if you're already using Writely? Don't worry,

Current users can keep using Writely as is.

Yes, you can keep using Writely, and we promise that we'll work hard to ensure that the transition to our new Google-ized service is seamless. And yes, we agree that the ability to share documents and collaborate is critical to Writely users, so we'll continue to allow existing users to add collaborators even as we temporarily stop accepting new sign-ups. However, we are limiting the number of new collaborators (who aren't already registered with Writely) that you can add for the next few days.

Questions?

We figure you probably have lots more questions, so we came up with an FAQ to answer them. But enough about you! Aren't you at all curious about why WE (Sam, Steve, Claudia and Jen) are excited about being part of Google?

Here are our "top 10" reasons why being part of Google is fantastic for Writely and the Writely team:

10. Writely is like a caterpillar that we hope to make into a beautiful butterfly at Google!
9. We love Google's philosophy and values -- especially "Focus on the user."
8. We're as passionate as Google is about respecting users' privacy.
7. Many of our users are already Google fans using other Google services.
6. Being at Google will help us do more great things faster.
5. Some people didn't feel comfortable trusting a tiny startup with their documents...and we're no longer a tiny startup.
4. We like lava lamps and they're pretty much standard decor at Google.
3. Three words: Free Googleplex lunches ;)
2. As fun as it's been to launch a popular, global, 24x7 Web service, it'll be nice to take a vacation once in a while!
...and the number one reason???
1. We'll be able to bring Writely to not just thousands but millions of users -- the more, the merrier :-)

Thanks to everyone who has helped us get here...especially all our Writely beta users!

Comments:
Congratulations! I think it is awesome, I can only imagine this service getting better.

Congratulations. But the FAQ link 404s back to your home page. Also, can we come over for a free delicious lunch?

Congratulations. I know you have worked hard on this project.

Congratulations! I hope this works out for you.

I think its awesome that writely and google are together. I dream of a day when all I need is google and its partners for everything.

Congratulations! What was the price tag?

Congrats. You all deserve a pat on the back and a long vacation. Cha ching.

Great news for you! If I'm correct you're running writely with asp/c#, yes? On windows boxes or with Mono? How are you going to integrate in the world of Google? I don't think they run a lot of Microsoft products.

wow! that is amazing

congratulations gentlemen!!

so how much did the Big G give you for the site?

I consider myself an active user of Writely, for collaborating on business plan writing, developing brainwaves, minor projects, taking notes on the web... What I really think Writely lacks is integration with an IM client. Now with Google, i really see the synergy with sth like GTalk. I always use MSN Im for Writely collaboration, now having Gtalk wld be neat!

I saw this one coming some time ago. Googles next stop: IROWS.COM. One step closers to the Google Office Suite.

Best news I've heard this month. Now I can see searching my docs at Writely with GDS! How about, "save this document to Writely" from my Gmail. Oh, the possibilities are endless.

I am so happy with you, people, you cannot imagine! Great news to start a great evening!

Nice job. Would like to actually be able to see my sister again sometimes.
e

excellent! glad you didn't go with yahoo or ms! i'm sure this will become and even better product than it is now :)

11. Money.

:D
concrats!

Congratulations! You worked for it!

I wonder who is going to get /.ed tomorrow ;)

Congratulations, that is fantastic news!

ka-ching!!!!

Congradulations to you all.

Hard work and dedication have once again prevaled.

Just goes to show that even when there is a lot of competition, If you do something really well, you will be successful.

Congratulations to all of you...

I'm eager to see your work integrated into google's applications.

Enjoy your vacation.

I can't say how happy I am for your company and I can't think of a better one for google to buy. Can't wait to see what the future holds :-D

I'm very happy for you guys! Excellent work! I love your product. Let it be the cornerstone of the new Google Office Suite...

Congrats! I love Writely, I love Google. I'm so enthused, what will I do with myself?!

Well done guys. To inspire the rest of us that have ideas and the skills it's got to be asked though; How much? :)

this is certainly good news for you, congratulations!

however: a few hours ago I was suggesting writely to a friend to use it for collaboratively editing and publishing a book.

this move of yours makes me revoke that recommendation for two reasons:

-- writely is not operational for such a project right now and there is no indication whatsoever how long the move will take ... a "waiting list" is a pathetic answer to this problem
-- given the recent issues google is having regarding copyright and privacy we will have to go through a completely new and very thorough trial & testing phase to be able to recommend writely again

Enjoy a long vacation! You deserve it! :)

Congratulations. Personally I have experienced Google to slowly fall quality-wise the last couple of years, so in that sense it's good that they finally can another quality product in. I can only hope that there will be not only a seamless intergration with google, but also a seamless, not intrusive intergration with the rest of googles services.

The time forward will be interesting. got to admit that I sort fo feel nervous privacy-wise. Whilst the google is a lesser of evils, I still do not want contextual ads beside, over or under my writely documents. That would be the end as far as i am concerned.

Anyway, contgratulations once again.

A big congratulations to the Writely folks. This is exciting news for the end users, like me.

:)

That's a pretty cool move !!

i like reason number 3

You love google? for censoring china people or for what?
It was nice project.

Congrats but have to wonder if they will give your the creative ideas you always had or just dump what you have for the idea to implement into something else. I hope the above case is not true and google is great for you guys.

I'm happy that your future is secure, best of luck, I'm on the waitlist.

I knew who you guys were going to be the day Sam contacted me. Amazing stuff. I am just happy to be involved on your way to greatness. I hope Writely becomes the way we share all of our documents in the future.

Make me proud.

- Kevin Milden

Good job guys!

Congratulations. I've been with Writely since launch and I use it daily for personal and professional and interpersonal writing and mind dumps. It's brilliant and has changed several things for me.

I'm very happy with Writely the way it is right now. Congratulations that others are happy enough with it too to acquire you.

Please don't go changing too much as it's pretty spot-on for me right now. And don't go white lofi either.

I can so not wait for this feature to get all googl-fied - yay!!!!

Good move guys -- looking forward to seeing this service develop.

what's next? an online spreadsheet tool for google? maybe Numsum.com - a pretty cool app on the web.

Happyness and joy to the Writely crew

google needs a contact manager/crm like PushCRM

Os lo habéis ganado. El trabajo realizado en Writely es prácticamente insuperable... incluso a los ingenieros de Google le hubiera costado llegar a ello.

Enhorabuena - Congratulations.

I am not elated by this news. While Google is a great technology company with nearly infinite resources I no longer feel comfortable with them.

Writely was on its way to being a great entity in and of itself. Google generates rediculous profits off of ad revenue. I do not look forward to seeing Goooooogle ads all over my work space.

congratulations! awesome news!

Glad to hear. I have not really used your service beyond playing around with it, but I will have to take a closer look again once you open the sign ups back up again

Omedetou! It's soooooooo cool !!

Awesome! Google is a great parent for any web service, small or large!

Exelnete trabajo muchachos, we make a better future now!

Congratulations. I've been delighted with Writely and am generally quite happy with Google. I wish you and them (and us!) all the best.

WC

Greaat...!

great....
Congratulations. I know too that you have worked hard on this project.

Congrats #54. This is totally awesome. Now when are you going to make an online spreadsheet?

Totally awesome news... I'm really happy for you guys. Hope the software/hardware transition goes smoothly!

Congrats!! Your web service is great and should be shared with the masses for all their classes.

Excelent! I can see how much effort you've put in making a GREAT application for everyone. I'm really glad for you. If you are taking suggestions, I'd recommend you to take those vacations here on a beach in Venezuela ;-)

Congratulations!

cool!!! congrats!

(All my favorite services are being bought by Google/Yahoo/Microsoft giants. Scary stuff.)

I'm happy for you guys that you will finally get some money off this great service you're offering.

Best of luck.

This is great news =) I could imagine Gmail, Writely and (soon hopefully) Google Calendar all integrated and helpful in my work.

Great job, you guys! You're amazing product is only going to get better!

am happy that you are finally getting paid for your efforts. Hope you will make sure that the move will improve your service without giving too much to big business

Well done Writely - I just joined your service and like it immediately - then find out you are part of Google!

Way cool

David

I always imagined such a service and you guys created. Conguratulations.

Well done! This is great for you guys, but bad for the service, it'll now have a tonne of google fanboys crawling all over it! :(

Congratulations! You guys well deserve this fortune. I can't wait to see how Writely improves positively now with Google's backing.

That's truly awesome- I knew Writely was a Good Thing the instant I saw it, and I have a pretty good idea what joining Google means for a startup.Congratulations to you. :)

Congratulations!! Google is a great company.

Now kill Microsoft!!

Yeah Baby! I just love this type of news. As a user of both Writely and most of Google's services, I throw out my arms and embrace you both with a big warm Congratulatory Hug!

Congratulations. You guys deserve it for creating the best app. of this genre by a mile!

terrific news -- you guys deserve it. Of course this is coming from an intensive writely user so you might consider the sentiment biased -- but what the heck, good work guys

I think you will help google in getting to their goals. Free everything. I am with you guys.... Keep it rolling.

I like Writely, (though admittedly don't use it that often), and hope that the links to Google is as successful as can be.
http://www.tech.port.ac.uk/staffweb/duke-wie/blog/2006/03/10/google-buys-writely/

I discovered writely just two or three week ago, and I thought immediately it was the perfect alter ego for my gmail account...how could you people guess that? :D Congrats!

P.S: actually I was a bit doubious about point 5. in your hitlist...I would prefer Writely to grow indipendently from big companies, tough I really like Google. Moreover I know how difficult this could be...

Congratulations!
I hope this service getting better!

baldomax.com

Cngratulations! will this be part of some kind of Google Office? Google should take a look at www.zimbra.com as well.

Bravo Writely!!!!
Hope your service would stay excellence!!!

Congrats!!! Great work guys and gals.

Congratulations! - Felicidades!
:)

Congrats to the writely team :)

zimbra is already free software. Web2.0 is not free.

I've been following Writely since you announced it, and it's very awesome that you got purchased by Google of all people! Great work! I'm very happy to see such an excellent product get recognized.

These are good news, I didnt used it before but if writely now is part of google I have to try it, I really believe, it has to be awesome!!

Great news. It'll be interesting to see how the partnership with Google goes.

I blogged about your acquisition here: http://healthweb20.blogspot.com/2006/03/google-acquires-upstartle.html

this is awesome! well done! i'm part of a non-profit serving refugees around the world. we began using writely.com last december after i heard NPR mention it on my way to the office one morning. you guys have greatly enhanced the ability for our leaders, scattered on 5 continents, to work together. thanks for increasing our capacity to care for forcefully displaced people in the world!

Congrots!
Its great I hope soon I can share my document from gmail!!!

I'll add my congratulations too. You guys have built a great product with only three people. Just the way you've been attentive on the support boards show you're really committed and passionate about this work. I'm glad you'll be able to tap the deep technical pockets of Google (free lunches there, really, wow, I'm in the wrong industry!).

Oh, and thanks for thinking of us current users and closing registration until you can ramp up the servers. It would be a big hassle to have to un-Writely some of my sites!

Guys, This will be a big hit !!

Sincerest congratulations! I've been spreading the word about this site for some time, and I'm thrilled for you.

Cha! Ching!

Nice job! I have enjoyed Writely over the past couple of months and look forward to bigger and better things from you!

Cheers!

$$$$$$$$$$$
Here is a way to enjoy yourselves.
Do yourselves a favor, when the check clears, and when you get your new Hummers, go buy yourself the Three 6 Mafia Album, put it in the Car CD player and play Track 6, "Popping my Collar".

Then relax!
Good work guys!!!

Can't wait to try the stuff!

Writely looks like a very cool technology. Having a widespread user base like the one that comes with this type of move will only help it improve. Can't wait for my sign-up invitation. [wink]

Congrats!

Congratulations, Writely team! Take this opportunity and run with it!

Congratulations!

Here I am suggesting you guys to join efforts with Wikimedia and you guys did one better: joined efforts with Google and Blogger.com!

You guys deserve the credit and the success that the Google deal will undoubtedly bring. Writely is a very neat program and you guys were super as site owners.

All the best

Ren

Congratulations! Great work pays off! Keep up the good work and enjoy.

Hi Claudia and the rest of the team.

On behalf of all at Adaptive Path - congrats!

I can't wait until registrations open up again....this is awesome stuff....

Congratulations! It can only help bring your excellent service to a wider and more diverse user base.

What should Google's next "stop" be?

If they're serious about gaining another massive new income stream, MatchTo.com, of course!

Steve

I've been a Writely fan for some time now, and am glad to hear that it's joined Google. I've been using it with my LaszloMail account but signed up with Gmail just in case!

Congratulations to all.

1) Write something crap
2) Get bought by Google
3) Profit

Congratulations. Mind if I steal your business model?

(aaron - aaron acephalo us)

Congrats! You guys deserve the recognition for a great product.

Adorei o Writely desde o primeiro instante. Obrigado a todos da equipe pelo belo trabalho e pela força!
Sucesso a todos!
Abraços!
Juca

sorry but.. i trusted leaving my content on writely more when it was indep.. as apposed to google. why would i want my content to help make google more money.. or why would i trust that they wouldn't have same issues as with me entrusting them with my email.

good luck.. i'll stick with other tools.

you have done a great job .
I have just seen some screen shots ,
you deserve to join google
congratulation ,
btw: when you will provide sign up again ?

To all the anonymous naysayers: Why fault Google for being upfront about doing what companies like Microsoft and Adobe do behind your back? Google's found a way to make massive amounts of money with free services by scanning content and delivering targeted ads, and you all act like they're a step away from committing identity theft or exposing your dirty secrets to the public. But do you have any idea how often software from the likes of Microsoft and Adobe call home?

Anyone that expected Writely to survive without (1) selling out to a company like Google, or (2) adopting a similar ad-delivery mechanism themselves, is living in la-la land. Suck it up and live with it, or go back to using Microsoft Word.

To Writely: Good goin'! I've secretly hoped this was a step Google would take... Looks like a Google Office is inevitable, now if they can just unveil their calendar and some personal organizer tools.

Congrats on the google gobble. Writely is quickly becoming an integral part of my online existence and has all but replaced my need/dependence on that other word processor. Keep up the good work. Can't wait to see what's coming.

Congratulations guys. I can't think of a more deserving web service.

I'm looking forward to whats next!

Hi

Please allow access to the old users. The site doesn't seem to open the sign in page..
Concerned authorities please look into the matter.

The Old users are not able to access the writely page.

Concerned authorities kindly look into the matter.

a writely account on sale on ebay: there will be a market?

Congratulations! A thing of beauty just got better!

great deal for writely and google. I found something where you can post notes and comments anywhere in the body of the html documents. Check this out: www.querymaster.org. Go to any document in the system and you can actually post notes and comments in the html body.

Hmmm ... '10. Writely is like a caterpillar that we hope to make into a beautiful butterfly at Google!' ... talking about butterflies ... http://hp.msn.com/global/c/lg/msft94.gif ;)

Invasion into Redmond territory...Game is now ON. :-)

Let's see... now Google can read all that I write here as well as on my gmail account? Yay! More ads, more of my attention/time/work being capitalized on by the "do no evil" (unless it's China, then it's just bizness) Google-heads!

No thanks. I am takin my bizness elsewhere. Google should stick with what it used to know best... search!
